Page Thirty-Eight
Panel One Overlord (off panel): There! A real planet… but its red desert would offer no shelter… perhaps farther… closer to the sun… you ship goes back…
Panel Two Overlord (off panel): …Along it’s trail that arises from this blue planet! Your planet! Bright and welcoming with its luminous atmosphere…
Panel Three Overlord (off panel): So calm and serene… seas spread out and pure… gentle mountains… trees… flowers and birds, an enchanting paradise that demands to be subjected!
Panel Four Overlord (Off panel): Cities of elegant architecture… verdant parks… technological marvels…
Panel Five Overlord (off panel): As your ship returns to its place of origin, your fellow human beings there to wave you off… it becomes a landing point!
Panel Six Overlord (off panel): A young girl is waiting for you! When in reality, she leaves you forever! But… By the Supreme Evil! You both speak… backwards!
Girl (backwards): Goodbye, John! Do not forget me!
Blackstar (backwards): See you soon, Leia!
NOTES:
* John is certainly taking this dangerous trip into deep space lightly, he's just that cool and collected... it even looks like he's heading off with his briefcase for just another day at the office lol
* Another distinction between this and the cartoon originals - here, Blackstar's girlfriend he's leaving behind on Earth is named Leia rather than Katana.

Of course, as written these are just seperate continuities to each other, but if you're like me and like to 'join the dots' the two different girlfriends are a pretty simple problem to overcome - her name is simply Leia Katana She is Lt Katana after all, so you can take it to refer to a last name (although I actually worked with a woman whose daughter was named Katana... maybe she was a Blackstar fan )

Yes please, I would very much like to join the dots, so Leia Katana suits me fine!!!

Panel One: Overlord (off panel): But I can decipher… You were John… She was Leia! You had sworn fidelity! Ugh! Certainly, this foolish love reigns on many worlds…
Leia (backwards): When will you return, my love?
Blackstar (backwards): This will be my last mission, darling!
Panel Two Blackstar (thinking): Leia… Leia… Leia…
Panel Four Overlord: Enough! Love… always love! And I see that woman’s name awakens your memories!
Blackstar: L… Leia… Leia…
Panel Five Overlord: That’s it! Continue, Blackstar! Tell me about your planet! What is its name? What is its galactic position?
Mara: No! Blackstar! No! Be quite!
Blackstar: Le… Leia…
Panel Six Blackstar: After… a long and cruel history… wars… famines… and revolutions… came the period of peace… and planetary consciousness… brilliant centuries… wisdom… progress of the mind… techniques… interstellar travel… I… I… Leia…
Overlord (off panel): That’s enough, Blackstar! Its name! What is its name?
Panel Seven Blackstar (off panel): The… The… The… The Earth!
Page Eight Overlord: I see it! Five billion happy people will soon be five billion slaves in my service … unless I decide to destroy them first! Ah! Ah! Ah! I recovered your spaceship… Overlord: …to repeat the cosmic path you just revealed to me!

Thanks for page 39 dude!
Well, Overlord got very close in succeeding in his deadly cause in this comic! This page is full of dramatic panels!

I like the idea of Overlord having recovered Blackstar's spaceship intending to use it to spearhead his attack on Earth.

Interesting how despite Overlord not being depicted using the Power Sword in this continuity, he still has a 'regular' sword to pull out so that he can have a climactic sword fight with Blackstar...

I like the fact that Mara shows that she's really in love with Blackstar in every chance she gets, something that we never got to see in the cartoon...

The French comics both really ran with that angle! It's an interesting take, especially given how underplayed it was in the cartoon itself. Maybe the French are just romantics like that? I've mentioned it before, but it's also interesting that both the Pif Gadget comic and this one also had it that Overlord was looking to further his conquests past Sagar, with plans on conquering Earth and presumably other planets. And unlike the Mara/John romance, that idea really wasn't in the cartoon at all.

That romantic triangle among John, Mara and Klone, is well done in French publications...
Unfortunately the cartoon had a short-live...it's possible we could have much more reveals in a second season...

Unfortunately, I doubt Filmation would have ever really done more with the Mara/John relationship than what was presented - it wasn't really Filmation's style. Even so, a second series would have been great to see - more adventures of Blackstar on Sagar are always welcome!
