No way.
The first one, 'Fellowship', was the weakest entry in the series. Dull, boring and slow-paced. 'Two' was an excellent movie, loved the fight at the end, but far from perfection in terms of story-writing. 'Return' is the greatest entry. Fascinating, fast-paced, magnificent. Kudos to Jackson for this splendid third chapter.

I'm disagree. My favorite is Fellowship- Extended Edition. I don't find it dull, boring or slow paced at all! I found it a very strong story with the amazing Helm's Deep part. Gandalf facing off against the Balrog is the coolest thing ever. The Death of Boromir was tragic awesome too.
I thought 2 Towers was the weakest. A third of the movie is taken up with Frodo moaning and fainting, Sam wailing his name over and over and Golum being a sinister suck-up while they climb a mountain. Gods, someone just kill them already to put them out of our misery. I thought killing Saruman off was a mistake. Sending him into exile with his powers broken is what happens in the book and I think would have been better, even if you don't have him take over the hobbit's village at the end. Let him live in miserable exile with Wormtongue as a regular human. Humiliating & humbling and a well deserved ending for him.
I generally liked Return but somehow not as much as Fellowship. I wish they could have shown Faramir finding the seedling of the White Tree at the end and returning it to Gondor and a bit more of his romance with Eowyn. That would have more firmly rounded things off nicely for me.
Oh well, they packed all 3 movies solid with awesome stuff, especially the Extended Editions so only very minor complaints really. Truly, finally they set the benchmark for fantasy movies now. Everything since is now measured against them.

I haven't seen the extended editions yet, they are NOT cheap, at least here (in Italy). Each movie has got a full package plenty of DVDs, and that's really expensive. By the way, I just felt 'Fellowship' missed something, and I didn't like the so-called "climax" (how bad was the make-up of the trolls !!!). Said that, 'Two' is a really great movie, but lacked a large amount of fantastic elements, I was expecting a more Fantasy-oriented movie and it felt like an average medieval war flick! On the other hand, the third one was ALMOST perfect. I didn't like the way they "treated" Saruman... like a simple "image" which lacked deep and substance. I didn't like the way they depicted him at all, he was almost non-existent... it totally sucked. All 3 movies are good if not great, anyway. You're pretty much right, MetalDragon. Three masterpieces. ... one day I'll buy those Extended Editions!

Sorry, but Fellowship was for me the best out of the three, with Return a close second.

Jay, Saruman wasn't killed off until Return of the King.
Whitedwarf, The Two Towers as an average medieval war flick?! Um, did you forget about Treebeard and the Ents, the Dead Marshes, Gandalf thrashing the Balrog and then reappearing in a blaze of light in Fangorn Forest? The fighting went on in TTT just as long as it did in RotK.

What I'm trying to say is that the elf stuff doesn't interest me so much, and that's because Liv Tayler... I don't like her casting, to begin with. ;D
Said that, I feel the first one is the weakest entry in the series because the uninteresting plot, the crappy special effects (sorry), the slow pacing and the incredible lack of depth in Saruman's depiction (not that the latter two movies depict him any better, however).

I liked the first one because it sets up the whole trilogy. The Shire! Lothlorien! Rivendell! Moria! The Last Alliance of Elves and Men (Isilduuuurrrrr!)! Gandalf laying the smack down on the Balrog! The Ringwraiths!
There's so much to love!

Sorry man, I'm with zimraphel on on this one. I just love Fellowship for those reasons and more. The Extended Edition has Galadriel giving them their gifts which I thought was an important little scene that I love. I thought the special effects didn't look bad, I'm not sure which Orcs offended you in the end bit.
I was disappointed by Two Towers because a whole quarter of it is wasted on Frodo/Sam/Golum (boring!) and I wasn't thrilled with the character design of the Ents. They looked/acted too cartoony to me. I thought they didn't have a sense of weight to them. I would have liked to see them wading through the ground like it was mud to them. They just kind of... tiptoed along instead. I thought having the actor who played Gimli doing the voice for Treebeard was lame too. Oh, don't get me wrong, I love the Helms Deep part. That was intense.
One character I missed, even though it was a (very!) tiny part, was Radagast the Brown. It would have been great to see him ask Gandalf go to Orthanc and get the message from the moth and send the eagle lord to rescue him. I love wizards.

I think Peter Jackson did a nod to Radagast with the moth.
Personally, the one character I wanted to see was Glorfindel. I also wanted to see the footage of Gil-galad getting fried by Sauron.

I still think the third one is truly the best, because there's a bit of everything in it, and the whole is FAR GREATER than the sums of its parts (if you know the feel).
TWO TOWERS has an impressive final battle.
The "final battle" at the end of FELLOWSHIP was weak and badly-crafted, IMHO. The make-up was very poor, even.
