One of my favorite authors is André Norton. An amazing lady she is one of the first women sci fi authors. Her first (adventure) novel was in the mid '40s, her first sci fi novel was in the early '50s and she kept writing all the way up until she died in the late '90s. A huge body of work, probably her most famous is her fantasy series the Witch World and her sci fi novel The Beast Master which were bizarrely fused together to create the movie "Beastmaster"!
Her sci fi novels are fascinating because she focuses on psionics and strange events happening in the ruins of ancient alien star civilizations/people affected by ancient alien artifacts. In some of her novels, psionics has advanced to the point of altering reality (like magic!) and the way she does it is amazing. I wonder if she was one of Michael Reaves inspirations because many of his episodes remind me of her novels.
As an interesting side note: I'm in the process of working on a timeline/chronology of her Witch World series. The novels take place at different times and often interweave/tell parallel stories with different characters. I'm also trying to put together a timeline of her sci fi novels which reference certain alien races, planets, and events of other novels and are set at different times as well.
Many of her novels are now being re-printed, mostly in omnibus format. If anyone is interested in a list of titles, let me know.

For anyone searching for André Norton's novels:
Witch World series: Witch World (1963) Web of the Witch World (1964) Year of the Unicorn (1965) (all 3 novels collected in Gates to the Witch World omnibus)
Three Against the Witch World (1965) Warlock of the Witch World (1967) Sorceress of the Witch World (1968) (All 3 novels collected in Lost Lands of the Witch World)
The Crystal Gryphon (1972) Gryhpon in Glory (1981) Gryphon's Eyrie (1984)
Horn Crown (1981) [takes place way before all the other novels]
The Jargoon Pard (1974) [sequel to Year of the Unicorn]
'Ware Hawk (1983)
Gate of the Cat (1987)
Short story collections well worth getting: Spell of the Witch World (1972) Trey of Swords (1977) Lore of the Witch World (1980)
Her later Witch World novels and short story collections I haven't listed. They're not as good. Many were co-written with other, less experienced authors and simply don't have the amazing... mystique of her earlier writing.

Sounds like the type of sci-fi I like... also, I absolutely love "sci-fantasy" (Is that 'Blackstar', even?). So huge thanks for suggesting her work. I must research on her a bit.
