Well, it seems like the Sword of Omen's powers are very thin and not effective in a battle. I think the Starsword could easily break the blade in two parts. Aside that, John is a super-powered human, while Lion-O retains an alien biology. I bet John is superior in many ways. This doesn't detract from Lion-O's value as character, even!

beside that John's fight against Overlord was toughter, cause Lion-O had more powerfull allies (panthro,cheetara,tygra,w.kat,w.kit,lynx-o,pummyra,bengali and the respectfull Jaga). But i respect Lion-O too..

Why would they even fight each other?

Ok, let make this right. Lion-o is a good boy but always in need to be bailed out by Panthro and the others, he's too hot tempered and often too childish. And way tooo serious! Naa, John would simply overcome Lion-o with his awesomeness, and maybe with his sword that's way more handy than the sword of Omen. I'd say.

Why would they even fight each other? Who knows. Maybe if the ThunderCats are deceived by the Overlord. Anyway, the ThunderCats are supposed to inhabit in a future version of our Earth, right? A very distant future, even from John's perspective.

What IS it with guys and boss fights? Probably a testosterone thing, who's got the bigger "sword".

The hero vs hero battle is a standard of crossovers - if there ever was a Thundercats/Blackstar crossover, I'm sure the two main men would have an obligatory tussle (with neither of them actually being shown to have a clear advantage, so all fans can be happy, naturally)

Why would they even fight each other? Because John is angry. He didn't get a remake series...

I think a battle between John and Lion-O would be an inderesting challenge. It is better to see the battle without the other characters from the two worlds.
For me Blackstar is the winner because has the advantage to be an astronaut a very smart person indeed.I don't tell that Lion-O isn't smart but think that was just a kid when travels in a capsule to another world.
As for their muscle power i think the to of them have the same.Ah by the way Starsword is my favourite sword ever.It has an excellent minimal and sharp desing in my opinion what do you think?

Don't forget that Blackstar's physical powers are far superior. Lion-O is just a feline humanoid. To me, the Starsword is the most iconic sword ever conceived in Cartoonland. Case closed.
