Crack!
The sound of wood hitting leather echoed across the Trobbit Forest, followed by a babble of whooping cheers and whistles so enthusiastic that they startled a flock of Sagareasian Geese into scattered flight.
"Nice hit, Klone!" Blackstar called out, flashing his friend a quick thumbs up. At his side, Poulo whistled encouragements as the shape shifter dropped the homemade baseball bat and started running towards first base.
"I've got it, I've got it," Terra called out, his eyes glued to the ball as it arched through the sky even as he scrambled to position himself beneath it waving a hand sewn baseball mitt in the air.
"I've got it, I've got it," Riff called out from the opposite direction, his attention similarly fixed skywards and not on where he was going.
Blackstar winced in sympathy - the outcome was inevitable. The two Trobbits crashed into each other with a massive thump, arms and legs going everywhere. Poulo let out a mournful whistle.
"I've got it," Gossamer interjected, positioning himself perfectly under the ball with a few careful flaps of his massive ears so that it fell neatly into his gloved hand without any trouble.
While all this was going on, Klone had been given a free run towards home, an opportunity he was making good on as he rounded third base. "Come on Gossamer, tag him!" Carpo called out from the sidelines, shaking his fists in the air encouragingly. You can do it!"
Klone looked up as the smaller Trobbit swooped down towards him, the ball outstretched to tag him as he ran past. "I guess I better hop to it, then," the shape shifter quipped, and without breaking stride transformed his body into that of a much smaller, much more agile Rabbit-Toad.
Realising his strategy, Gossamer tried to put an extra burst of speed into his descent but it was too late and he could only watch as Klone leapt effortlessly over his head, landing on the home plate behind him.
"Safe!"
Balkar called it as Klone shifted back into his normal form.
"This game sure is easy when you can turn yourself into a Rabbit-Toad," he joked.
"I don't think they had shape shifters in mind when they invented baseball, buddy," Blackstar laughed, clapping his friend on the back to congratulate him.
Absorbed as they were by all the fun they were having, the Trobbits, Klone and Blackstar were all unaware that their game had attracted an unintended audience. They moved silently through the woodlands that fringed the Trobbits makeshift baseball diamond, fanning out around their targets with a feline grace that marked them as expert hunters. They would remain undetected until the time was right, until the time to strike was at hand...
