A guy called 'Wolfman' on the Blackstar IMDB sub-forum wrote this interesting insight: "I've been trying to put together Shogun and Blackstar and heres 7 reasons why I think Shogun may have been Filmmation's inspiration for Blackstar. 1) In "Shogun" the leading character is English ship pilot John Blackthorn. In "Blackstar" the leading character is astronaut John Blackstar. 2) In "Shogun", John Blackthorn finds himself stranded in Fedual Japan when he is shipwrecked on the Japanese Coast. In "Blackstar" John Blackstar finds himself marooned on the primitive planet Sagar when his shuttle crashes, after entering a black hole. 3) In "Shogun" John Blackthorn gets caught up in the middle of a war between two powerful men, Toranaga and Ishido. In "Blackstar" John Blackstar joins forces with a resistance against an evil overlord. 4) The "Shogun" mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain was aired in 1980 and the short-lived "Blackstar" cartoon series aired in 1981, a year after "Shogun". 5) In "Shogun" both rival enemies Toranaga and Ishido are fighting for the title of "Shogun" and who possesses that title will gain ultimate power. In "Blackstar" the Overlord possesses a powerful sword (NOTE: they fight for the swords). 6) In Both "Shogun" and "Blackstar" the characters' weapons are swords. 7) In "Shogun" John Blackthorn has a beard. In "Blackstar" John Blackstar has sideburns." Sounds TRUE.

Shogun was based on actual events and people--the names were just changed. Personally I think this Wolfman guy is grasping at straws, and trying to make connections that just aren't there.
The inspirations for Blackstar are clearly The Lord of the Rings, the John Carter of Mars stories, and a little bit of Star Wars; the creators even say so. No one affiliated with Filmation has ever said a word about Shogun.

I updated my posts on this thread.
I will do the same for the other important threads of the forum.

Honestly, the similarities and the parallelisms could have been subconscious from the authors' part, because the connections are there for sure.

When you have several authors at once, the chances are even less likely.
